Gumede offi cially opened the Makro store in Cornubia,
north of the City.

ETHEKWINI Mayor Zandile Gumede has heaped praise on the new Makro store in Cornubia, saying it has contributed to the creation of employment both during and after construction. The store provided over 400 permanent job opportunities while over 600 people were employed during construction.

Speaking during the official opening on 27 March, Mayor Gumede said the store has boosted the local economy. She was addressing residents who came out in their numbers to witness the opening of the store, which is the largest Makro in the province. The environmentally friendly store is about 20 000m2 in size and covers over six hectares of land.

His Majesty King Goodwill Zwelithini said he is grateful to be part of this historic event “I encourage Makro to consider undertaking import substitution and promote localisation as this will enhance the local economy,” he said. Mayor Gumede said the City is looking forward to working with the store to improve Cornubia residents lives. “The store will continue to contribute to job creation and attract investment to the northern part of the City,” said Mayor Gumede. Chief Executive Officer for Makro stores Doug Jones welcomed all attendees.
