Construction of sidewalk underway in ward 70
Councillor Sathasivan Govender with workers at a construction site.
A pedestrian sidewalk is currently being constructed on M1 Higginson Highway opposite the Chatsglen railway station. The project, which began in December is expected to be completed in April.

The City continues to prioritise road safety and this sidewalk will assist in reducing fatal incidents that have left many families devastated. This is the busiest road in Sunset Avenue leading to the sprawling suburbs of Mobeni, Silverglen and Chatsworth. Ward 70 Councillor Sathasivan Govender said Woodhurst residents are eagerly looking forward to utilising the sidewalk.

Councillor Govender said the sidewalk will ensure the safety of residents when walking along the highway, especially learners who travel on foot from a nearby informal settlement to schools. “Many lives will be saved by the construction of this sidewalk and it will provide numerous safety benefits for local motorists and pedestrians,” he said. Councillor Govender added that seven constructors’ are working around the clock to complete this project.

However, he said there were unforeseeable delays in the beginning of the project, as the digging of the ground surface had proved to be a challenge. “I urged the community to be patience during the construction as the project will yield long term benefits.” he said.
