The Sports Development and Recreation Department of the eThekwini Municipality, in partnership with sports agency, Gerom Media, will launch the Sports Business Network (SBN), which is aimed at creating cohesion and partnerships between Government, sports and business.
The launch is also aimed at enhancing support mechanisms for Sports Federations and event organisers.
Representatives from local, provincial and national government, sports associations, federations, clubs, academies, commerce and industry as well as tourism and trade organisations are expected to attend the launch. There will be panel discussions and panelists include; Vusi Mazibuko, eThekwini Municipality; Prem Vayapuri, KZN Department of Arts, Culture, Sports & Recreation; Michael Jackson, Chairman FEDHASA-Coastal Regions; Andrew Layman, CEO of Durban Chamber of Commerce; Lennie Botha, KZN Hockey; Jessie Chellan, Sunfoil Dolphins; Chris Bruwer, Comrades Marathon; Vivienne Holden, eThekwini Municipality; Michael Murphy; ENS; Graham Daniel, 369 Communications and Pete de Wet, ITM Group.
“With Durban being promoted to becoming the Sport Capital of Africa and encouraging Federations and event organisers to bring international and national tournaments to our City, it is important that the services required to support these events, need to be sourced locally” says Teddi Adams from the Sport Development and Recreation Department.
The launch will feature a networking session, which is an ideal opportunity for local businesses to introduce themselves to both government and sports event organisers considering that a large number of events are planned for the province and city over the next 24 months. After the launch, a seminar will follow in which issues like support programmes for local businesses will be discussed as well as the aspect of sponsorships and how to ensure that sports or recreational events are not closed down by the law for failing to apply the regulations of the Safety at Sports & Recreation Events Act (SASREA).
