“Let’s play for Madiba” in support of Mandela Day is the mandate that our local and international soccer stars will adopt when they take to the field on 18 July at the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium.
Local soccer stars AmaZulu FC (the KwaZulu-Natal Newsmaker of the Year 2012 winners) will take on English giants Manchester City in an international friendly to mark Mandela Day.
Local organisers have urged members of the public to go out in their numbers and purchase their tickets for the spectacular international friendly to celebrate our nation and world leader’s 95th Birthday.
“Kick off is at 20h00 in the evening to allow most in our community to engage in 67 minutes of lending a hand in their communities. We want this to be the biggest turn out ever. We are counting on our soccer fans to support our local team and give a warm Durban welcome to our visitors,” says Dr Musa Gumede, Deputy City Manager of the Community and Emergency Services Cluster. He urged fans to get to the Stadium by 17h00 when gates open to enjoy the pre-match festivities.
Manchester City, the 2011/12 English Barclays Premier League Champions, arrive in the City on 11 July 2013 and the players of both teams will make special public appearances and take part in the Mandela Day activities, as part of giving back to the community in honour of Madiba.
KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Dr Zweli Mkhize says the event marks another opportunity to “live the Mandela Spirit”. “Madiba is about peace, goodwill and hope. He unites us all. So too does our sport and both on and off the field. We must give our local and visiting heroes a real KwaZulu-Natal welcome.”
EThekwini Mayor, Cllr James Nxumalo says the City is hard at work to make the event a success. “We are extremely honoured to be part of this event that honours a great statesman - Madiba. Let us gather at our iconic stadium to pay tribute to an iconic leader on his 95th birthday.”
Tickets are on sale at Computicket and prices range from R150, R250 to R350
