“We will fill-up the Moses Mabhida Stadium and support our national team, Bafana Bafana!” This was the assurance given to the Durban Host City Local Organising Committee by thousands of commuters, at various train activations over the past two days.
The activations started on Wednesday 16/01/13, where the KZN MEC of Sports and Recreation, Ms Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha, Mayor of eThekwini Municipality, Cllr James Nxumalo and various personalities went on a train ride from Tongaat Train Station to Duffs Road and ended at KwaMashu Station.
Today, 17/01/13, the train left from Chatsworth Station, to Emlazi and ended up at Moses Mabhida Stadium. This was then followed by a motorcade that went around various areas of Durban and ended up at the Clermont Taxi Rank. The personalities, which included kwaito star, Professor, comedian, Pastor Mjosty, gospel artist, Sifiso Ncwane, Ukhozi FM presenters and many more, handed out information pamphlets and gave away soccer balls and vuvuzelas to an excited crowd while urging them to go out and buy tickets to support the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations Tournament.
The Mayor, Cllr James Nxumalo, said that, with the amount of people that had been reached over the two days, he is confident that the stadium will be full on all match days. “Sport has a way of uniting people and we are very happy with the reception we have received from the commuters. Those who have not bought tickets have promised to do so and because our people love sports, particularly soccer, we have no doubt that they will not disappoint.” said Nxumalo
It was explained to the commuters that some of the matches are double-headers, meaning that with one ticket, you can watch two matches. AFCON ticket holders going to Moses Mabhida Stadium on match days will also be allowed to board the train free of charge.
After hearing this information, Sbusiso Mkhabela, a commuter, agreed that with the ticket costing as little as R50, this was indeed a bargain. He urged other South Africans to go out and fully support Bafana Bafana. “The tournament is on our homeground. Let us take advantage of this opportunity and go out in numbers to support our teams,” he said.
The 2013 AFCON Tournament will officially kick-off on Saturday, 19/01/13 with Bafana Bafana playing against Cape Verde in Johannesburg. This match, together with the opening ceremony, will be screened live at the Public Viewing Area at Durban’s New Beach. The Opening Ceremony will start at 15H00, with kick-off being at 18H00. All members of the public are invited.
