As custodians of heritage month, eThekwini Municipality’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit has embarked on various activities to showcase cultural, environmental, sports and other services that the Municipality provides as part of protecting and promoting our heritage.

This week (16-20 September 2013) the Unit will host various activities which form part of showcasing the City’s heritage and celebrating our culture.

Monday, 16th of September, the Municipality will launch the Reunion Aquatic Centre to be held at Isipingo Reunion at 11:00. This is an opening of a tower that will be used by lifeguards and ski-boat operators. The centre will enable rescue services to monitor people in the sea and launch a rescue in an emergency situation

From 16 to 19 September, there will be a Leisure and Recreation Conference at Suncoast Casino from 08h00 – 16h00. Officials from the Leisure and Recreation sector will discuss issues related to building environments, sustainable cities and preserving open spaces.

On Wednesday the 18th of September, winners of the Passbook competition will be announced and awarded at Bergtheil Museum. Throughout the year Grade 7 pupils from various schools were given “passbooks” which they had to get stamped every time they visit a museum. The pupil and school with the most stamps will win various prizes that include a cash prize and a computer.

Thursday the 19th September, primary school learners will be treated to some fun literature as they take part in a story-telling competition. This will take place at Durban Botanic Gardens at 09h00.

On Saturday the 21st of September lovers of the spoken word will be treated to some poetry, as various upcoming poets will showcase their talent at Stable Theatre from 09h00 – 14h00.

On Sunday, 22nd of September, upcoming gospel artists will be given an opportunity to showcase their talent and stand a chance to win a recording deal. This is done through the Municipality’s Gospel Icons Discovery Talent Search Finals to be held at Ohlange Sports Grounds from 10h00.
