BACKGROUND ON OPERATION SUKUMA SAKHE

Operation Sukuma Sakhe (OSS), which means Stand Up and Build is an integrated government programme designed to expedite services to the communities in an attempt to eradicate poverty and inequality. OSS constitutes the establishment of a War Room in each Ward where all government departments and civil society organisations work together to speedily address issues raised during household profiling. Household profiling is carried out by field workers who undertake a door-to-door survey of every household in the ward. Through a system of referrals, the relevant government departments are alerted and the necessary interventions are done.
