The Deputy Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Ms Rejoice Mabudafhasi will on Friday, 28/06/13, handover the R7.5m KwaMashu Buy Back Centre to the eThekwini Municipality. She will be joined by the Mayor, Cllr James Nxumalo and the MEC of Agriculture and Environmental Affairs, Dr Meshack Radebe.
The objective of this project is to address waste management issues by providing the Buy Back Centre and composting facilities as well as equipment associated with the operations of the Buy Back centre and also to promote recycling.
The project has created about 100 jobs for people around KwaMashu. It has also contributed towards SMME development as the company appointed for construction on site was a local contractor.
The establishment of the Centre has created employment opportunities for the locals as people around KwaMashu collect recyclable waste and sells it to the operator at the Buy Back Centre.

Part 2: Greenest Municipality Competition Awards
Deputy Minister will then proceed to the Marianhill Landfill site to present the national Greenest Municipal Competition Awards. The Awards have in recent years evolved from a mere focus on environmental protection to a sustainable development focus. They incorporate new elements such as Water Management, Energy Efficiency, Tree planting, Landscaping, Beautification, Public participation and Institutional Arrangement. The GMC has grown to see a need to address environmental protection, social upliftment and economic growth.
