Collapsed Whetstone Library Roof is Being Attended
The eThekwini Municipality’s Libraries and Heritage Department has today, 16/01/13, moved very swiftly to assess damage to the roof of Whetstone Library in Phoenix, Unit 11, that collapsed last night around 8h00 pm.
The roof collapsed on the library side of the building while the General Activities Room remained in tacked. When the roof collapsed there was one security guard on duty and there were no injuries.
Deputy Head of Libraries and Heritage Department, Guy Redman said they are currently on site doing the inspection in order to determine the root cause of the problem.
“We have Inspectors and the Engineers doing the inspection and based on their report we will be able to determine if the building is still structurally sound. In the same block we have the General Activities Room that was not affected which is also being inspected. We want to establish if it will be possible to operate from there in the meantime. The Inspectors and Engineer will advise us, if that is not possible we will provisionally close the library to make way for the refurbishment of the structure,” said Redman.
“If we are advised to close the library and to avoid unnecessary fines, we urge those we have borrowed books to return them to the neighbouring libraries like Stonebridge Library, Caneside Library, Shastri Park Library and Stanmore Library,”
