EThekwini’s Municipality’s Premium, Official event in honour of Nelson Mandela will be held at the historic voting site in Inanda at the Ohlange Institute this Wednesday, 17 July 2013. This is a not to be missed event and is of the stature and significance of events taking place nationally, due to the importance of the voting site as marking the start of democracy in South Africa. On the 27thApril 1994, Nelson Mandela cast the very first vote in South Africa’s first democratic elections at Inanda, Durban, at the Ohlange High School next to the home of Dr JL Dube, the First president of the African National Congress (ANC). The city expects a massive turnout to commemorate the day.
 
His Worship the Mayor James Nxumalo, proudly invites the citizens of Durban for a moment of celebration and contemplation as we celebrate Nelson Mandela at the historic heart of the Woza eNanda Heritage Route. A full day of activities have been planned by Durban Tourism offering some of the guests an opportunity to enjoy a guided visit through the historical Inanda area as we visit the home of the iconic Mahatma Gandhi at the Phoenix Settlement, the Inanda Seminary and the unique beauty of the area, before reaching the Mandela voting site at 13h00 for this very special celebratory moment.
 
Tour buses depart at 9.30 sharp from the Durban tourism beach office, where there is safe car parking. Alternatively, if you are unable to make the tour, you can drive directly to the Ohlange Institute at 13h00. The experience will give you a unique perspective of the importance of this historic and cultural node of Durban.
 
Leave your signature and message behind on the Mandela Tribute Wall that will be erected at Ohlange Institute and spend the day with wonderful local entertainment, poetry, witness the release of white doves and a tree planting ceremony to keep the Mandela Legacy alive in our City.
 
Mayor Nxumalo, proudly states that we should be honored to have such an historic wonder just 30 minutes from the City Centre and in years to come the Ohlange Institute will be a popular must see attraction for the City of Durban, in honour of our Mandela Legacy and we need to ensure that for generations to come the heritage of our city will always be remembered.
