Soccer fans from across the country and continent have flocked to the AFCON Host City, Durban ahead of the quarter final match between Bafana Bafana and Mali on Saturday, 02/02/2013 taking place at the iconic and world class Moses Mabhida Stadium. AFCON officials in KwaZulu-Natal have confirmed that tickets for the match are sold out and have again urged fans to get to the stadium early.
“This is the first time since 2002 that our home team is in the AFCON quarter finals so we can all imagine the excitement. We urge fans to get to the stadium early and we are doing everything possible to avert any traffic congestion ahead of the 20H30 kick off,” said Vusi Mazibuko, the Head of the 2013 AFCON Project Office in Durban.
He added that initial reports and evaluations indicate that the Host City is delivering successfully on its mandate to deliver on all five AFCON games to be played at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
“We wanted the games in our region to go off without problems and we have put in place all the necessary provisions to make this a memorable one for our Province. For the big mach this Saturday we again urge fans to make use of all designated parking areas and if possible arrive at the stadium early – at least two hours ahead of kick off.”
The following roads will be closed from 09H00am on all remaining match days, which are Saturday, 02/02/13 and the semi-final on Wednesday, 06/02/13:
• Masabalala Yengwa (NMR) Avenue will be closed from Sandile Thusi (Argyle) Road up to Smiso Nkwanyana (Goble) Road.
• Battery Beach Road will be closed from Suncoast Boulevard to Masabalala Yengwa (NMR) Avenue
• Isaiah Ntshangase (Walter Gilbert) Road will also be closed between Umngeni Road and M4. Access from M4 will only be permitted up to the Country Club.
The following roads will also be closed from 16H00 on the above-mentioned days:
• Somtseu Road will be closed from Stalwart Simelane (Stanger) Street to Masabala Yengwa Avenue
• Masabalala Yengwa Avenue will further be closed from Sandile Thusi (Argyle) Road to K.E Masinga (Old Fort) Road. However, some lanes will be open for vehicles travelling to and from Durban Station.
The following areas have been reserved for parking for those attending the games:
• Drive-Inn site parking for minibus taxis/ buses and general public (accessed via Brickhill Road)
• Natal Command Site 1 and 2 for the general public (accessed from Brickhill Road at the traffic circle)
• Paid parking at Suncoast Casino for the general public (accessed via Suncoast Boulevard)
• Mr Price Stadium for general public (accessed via Goble Road and Jacko Jackson Avenue)
• Mustering Field Parking for hospitality and commercial affiliates (accessed via Brickhill Road at the traffic circle)
• Moses Mabhida Stadium is reserved for VVIP, media and broadcast teams only (accessed via the Remote Search Park at the Old Drive-Inn site in Brickhill Road)
• Centrum Site for VIP and general public (accessed from Samora Machel (Aliwal) or Braam Fischer Street - free coach to the stadium from here)
• Motorists can also park their vehicles at the Durban Station and board a train, free of charge, upon production of a valid AFCON ticket or accreditation.
Mazibuko said that Metro Police will also be deployed at key points around the stadium to monitor traffic and assist the public to the available and demarcated parking zones. He also reminds the fans who have not been lucky to get their tickets that there are Public Viewing Areas (PVAs) where the matches will be screened live in some areas of the Province. Gates to the PVAs open an hour before kick-off and are as follows:
• Durban, New Beach;
• Esikhawini, eSikhawini College;
• Port Shepstone, eGamalakhe TB Molefe Sports Ground;
• Pietermaritzburg, Durban University of Technology (Indumiso College);
After Saturday’s game Durban hosts one semi final match and tickets cost R100 - R140. Tickets can be purchased at all participating Super Spars and at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, ticket office. Tickets can also be purchased through telesales on 087 980 3000 or It should be noted that for security reasons the ticket office will be moved from Moses Mabhida Stadium to the Athletics Stadium on Isaiah Ntshangase Road a day before each match day.
